Vaikunta Ekadashi is considered to be the most important Ekadashi out
of the twenty four Ekadashi observances. According to one Vishnu
Purana, observing the Ekadashi Vritha on Vaikunta Ekadashi day confers
the benefit equivalent to observing all the Ekadashis during the year.
It is believed that praying to Lord Vishnu on this day will help to
free soul from cycles of birth and rebirth. Vaikunta Dwaara (door to
Heaven) is said to be open on this day and will give easy access to
Lord Vishnu.
It is also believed that it was on this day that during the "Sagara
Mathana" (churning of the ocean), 'Amrit' (nectar) emerged out of the
ocean and was distributed to the Gods. Vaikunda Ekadesi festival is of
great significance at the Tirupati Balaji Temple, Srirangam Sri
Ranganatha Temple and at the Bhadrachalam Temple. In Kerala, it is
known as Swarga Vathil Ekadashi.
